La Mano che scaturisce dal Vuoto - The hand that spring out from emptiness

"Shin Jin Datsu Raku..." lascia cadere corpo e mente... lascia cadere! Nulla permane... Feci un sorriso e me ne andai senza rancore... Casa è in ogni dove adesso. Continuerà a morire e a rinascere in ogni momento...

Testimonials from Ken Zen Ichinyo Gasshuku
Rome, Tora Kan Dōjō, 19/21 January 2018

Welcome Letter from Sensei Taigō to the Ken Zen Ichinyo Gasshuku participants.
The divine technique, the masterful waza, the perfect gesture are the polar star of our daily quest. And in this quest, a life - that becomes itself a work of art - is consumed. As a sculptor who eliminates the superfluous, moment by moment, in every chisel stroke, the work is already completed. Every step is already the goal. There is no excuse for beginners or experts, there is no better time to wait for, nor more favorable conditions. This moment is our life. Concentrating, we enjoy every meeting, every gesture.
The gesture that in the exhaustion of the instant resounds eternally, reverberates in the three times and in the ten directions. Expressing a harmonious and beautiful gesture requires the unification of mind and body and the abandonment of all links with the illusory ghosts of the past and of the future, as we engage ourselves without reserve in the present. The Ken Zen Ichinyo Gasshuku is a short retreat in which to savor the aroma of a total presence, total sharing. The taste of the fullness of the present moment to which nothing is lacking.
I hope that our meeting will offer you the opportunity to savor this fullness. A taste that once tasted does not abandon us anymore and becomes a powerful orientation for our life. This year the Precious Presence of Master Iten Shinnyo will be an extraordinary blessing, inspiration and support for our practice.

"Shin Jin Datsu Raku ..." let go the body and mind ... Let them drop!
The voice of Master Shinnyo echoes as powerful as a sutra in my heart and in my mind ...
I took these words with me while I was going to sleep after Zazen , then I woke up with those words this morning in Zazen.
Nothing remains…
The moment passes through you like a flash, sweet as a caress, and it goes away.
What remains, as at the end of the bell sound, is reverberation ...
The bell does not stop playing for those who want to listen.
From Master to Student, it is the reverberation from the heart to the heart that is not looking for anything and that does not want anything in return.
Deeply devoted to each other they share and travel the same way ...
There is no greater Love.
Last night, during the meeting in the Zendō with Roshi  I remembered a person who once told me: "you are a person with a pure heart and, for this reason, easily malleable because susceptible to certain 'magical rites' (referring to Zen), to the illusory and 'imposing' presence of the figure of a Master. So I fear that in the world someone will take advantage of your availability and goodness of mind ... it's a real shame! '' I smiled and left without rancor ...
That same evening I sat in Zazen in the Dōjō.
I remember the shadow of the Master in Gassho passing behind me ... I started crying relentlessly ... a river full of joy.
Being in the right place at the right time.
I'm home ... I give my heart!
My house is a dream...
A shared a dream made of Practice with the Sangha, a constant reference to the care of what surrounds me.
I feel Love, so much that I cannot hold it anymore...
My house is a ship, I do not know where it will go, I do not know the waves it will meet, it will be difficult, it will be easy, I do not ask. Home is everywhere now.
I follow this 'movement' and I'm here.
What a gift!
Yes, maybe too big to think it's real...
A treasure transmitted and its devout key...
It is so much this receiving that my giving will never be enough ... A life is not enough! This is a real shame, I would say today to the dear person mentioned above...
Today, at the end of the Ken Zen Ichinyo Gasshuku, the maternal and compassionate eyes, the words, the pure heart, the smile on Roshi's face has been the re-confirmation.
Master Taigō, the burning candle that allows me to see; The rudder of the ship in the vast sea.
Aligned we follow the flow: gratitude, a seed grown without thinking about the fruits.
The execution of a Kata is like a seed that does not know how to sprout, simply it is born and expresses itself in its total nature without future thinking, it gives everything it has in that unique and unrepeatable occasion ... when it will be mature, it will not know.
It will continue to die and be reborn in every moment...
The mind drops, the total presence arrives and nothing else.
And this experience can only be understood if one wants to look deeply into the heart of a great Master, if one looks into his eyes during a Kata ... or while he pours coffee...
It is a transparency transmitted by the Buddha.
Three days together on the ship.
They passed too quickly, as Sensei said, just like a beautiful Mandala blown away in a moment...
In the air the colors, the perfumes and the essence of all of us together remain in harmony, indissoluble.
They remain indelible in the heart, forever.
I thank Life every day for letting me meet all this!
Thanks to Master Iten Shinnyo who with his precious presence supports our journey...
Thanks to the Master Taigō,
Thank you with all my heart!

My experience with the Ken Zen Ichinyo Gasshuku was wonderful !!! I felt like a small ant that was part of a large community but this community was not confined in the rooms of the Dojo ... it extended as the hours passed ... As if the energy produced in that place was expanded to the universe. I have seen many times a Karate exhibition but observing the practitioners with the Master closely was a different story .. It seemed that they did a dance ... a dance with power, with elegance with energy. Their being 'present' was palpable and I understood the reason for this event ... there was a common thread with the Zazen. Zazen is not just sitting and karate is the Zazen movement. I came out of this experience 'emptied' but at the same time 'full'. Thank you, thank you, and thank you again.

The experience of a Gasshuku always leaves you something inside. The memory with time might also fade but inexplicably, almost magically, it will come back to you when you least expect it.
If it is experienced in the way it should - a life under one roof to indicate the proximity between the participants - a Gasshuku makes you discover the teacher who leads it, the Person and the Artist that - up to that point - you vaguely knew but that you certainly had no idea of how he could be in a close contact situation, living together.
The Ken Zen Ichi Nyo Gasshuku is the same thing, only that it is not addressed to a Master, but to yourself and to the group, the Sangha, that participated in it. Like a conductor who coordinates and directs, the Master is there, but the true Artist is the group of which the Master himself is a part, together with the last arrived or the non-practitioner.
We talked about impermanence and in fact like all things, this also ended, so it is right to leave it behind. I therefore want to conclude my personal thought drawing inspiration from a correction on the kata Sanchin:
"The back is fundamental and we risk losing it if we focus too much on the front, but the important thing is to keep the practice alive, only in this way we will we be able to rediscover the Kata when we find the lost detail".

Liberati Alessandra
Perfect. Simply perfect. The enthusiasm of each individual was tangible. Perhaps this is what increased the alchemy. Sensei Taigo jokingly said "I did not think karate was so moving," referring to us spectators with shining eyes after witnessing his demonstration of Kata. Something beautiful and difficult to explain in those moments happened.
Seeing the sangha engaged in a demonstration of Karate was particularly exciting.
Another chapter apart should be opened for Master Shinnyo Roshi. Every time you listen to her, it immediately seems that everything can happen, that the other perspective is around the corner.
I had the feeling of being part of a wave. Very beautiful. I'm sure we'll be more numerous at the next Gasshuku at the Tora Kan Dojo.

Mazzola Francesco
I had never lived such an experience, where everyone with their own heart and mind made this harmony possible in the Dōjō.
Even the smallest things have become great, giving me a sense of gratitude I had never felt ... all this will remain imprinted permanently in my heart and in my mind.
With a nonprofit spirit, everyone has given something of himself, enriching the essence of our practice, leaving a trace without wanting to leave it, like the smoke of incense that draws distractedly a path that fades into the air and accompanies a thought towards awareness.
Gasshō

Lorenzo Hōshin Giovannetti
I have participated in many Ken Zen Ichinyo Gasshuku and the outcome is never obvious.
We must not arrive at a result, but the effectiveness (if this is the correct definition) of this retreat depends solely on us.
I think we should observe with particular attention what we are looking for when we go into a few days retreat.
Peace, quietness, a moment entirely for us?
The Gasshuku is none of these ... There is no quietness and much less space for ourselves.
Peace...? Perhaps yes, the one of those who don't have anything to lose.
Actually, I see the Ken Zen Ichinyo as abandoning oneself to something, abandoning oneself not to a person or a practice, not even to an idea, but abandoning oneself to an atmosphere, made of silence, breath and gazes.
I consider myself a veteran (if you allow me) and I guarantee that at the end of every Ken Zen Ichinyo the result of the retreat is always the same for every participant. Smile and enthusiasm.
It's true ... sometimes there are hard times. The impact caused by the deprivation of our little habits can be indigestible to many of us (including me), but then there is always something special about it, to the point that you are almost sorry when it ends.
It is the fullness of being, of being without artificial productions of our own ego, without excuses. You do things, you're wrong, you keep on doing, you are not wrong anymore, it does not matter, you go on, something else, something else to do, formal meal, Karate, samu .... and so on .... no mind ...!
In my early Ken Zen Ichinyo, I was often worried (especially when I started to assume responsibilities). But then everything turned out into an enjoyment of the moment.
Let me explain. I live three days, moment by moment, I enjoy every hour of the practice, be it Zazen, Karate, or other encounters, without ever thinking of what will come next, without ever losing the concentration of the here and now ... fully present (for what one can give and do).

I have been enthusiastically waiting for at least three years for this experience of Ken Zen Ichinyō. I thought it would certainly be an unusual and very powerful event, but I could not believe it would be so intense and full of opportunities for meeting with oneself and the others. As Sensei Taigō told us at the beginning, it is a real 'laboratory' and therefore a study on how to relate to everything that surrounds us and that is within us, and especially with time and spaces. We all had to deal with the difficulties of the organization, space management, to stick to a program and to a specific form ... and we had the extraordinary opportunity to be able to get to our bare nature and offer it for the benefit of the others and of all existences, from moment to moment.
It is amazing how time can be relative ... this seminar has lasted so little and yet it seems like a lifetime has passed ... an infinity of emotions are born and flowed in our hearts and in our minds. It was really a journey inside of ourselves in which at times there could be the risk of getting lost. But on this occasion, leading us and giving us the right orientation, there was the precious presence of Shynnyo Roshi. To me, her words were a gentle wind that swept away all the clouds and opened the sky of my mind to a much clearer view of things.
All this and much more was the Ken Zen Ichinyō, and for all this I give thanks to Shinnyo Roshi, to Sensei Taigō and to my fellow practitioners.

Sitting in Zazen for two days in a row, at dawn, is enough to realize that "Zen is a strong practice" - as Shinnyo Roshi said. It has been possible to verify it during the Ken Zen Ichinyo Gasshuku held at Tora Kan Dōjō of Sensei Paolo Taigō Spongia from 19 to 21 January. You have to sit on a particular cushion, a zafu, with crossed or almost crossed legs, looking for the right attitude that allows you to stay seated in that position - that is a bit difficult to define comfortable - facing a wall with a low gaze and a body relaxed in a natural way.
Everything is done together with some fellow practitioners, in the utmost silence and maximum concentration. And then you realize that the Zazen posture is everything or almost everything. A posture that has been handed down for thousands of years and that while being practiced is constantly being modified. Settling constantly while practicing, rectifying one's posture, becomes an intense activity.
And then you realize that sitting in Zazen is not an abstract practice in which one has to abandon oneself in some way, nor is a way of 'sitting down' where one is passively immobile. It is an activity that helps you release energy and, to use, the suggestive and strongly evocative image of Spongia Sensei "the correct posture becomes the cliff of a mountain from which we can observe the vast landscape, a privileged point of observation. That landscape is us and all that passes through us: thoughts, feelings, perceptions...”

E’ molto differente dall’ingozzarsi come facciamo oggi.
