Avevo un amico, Ozawa Doyu, un monaco. Quando Era in
un campo di concentramento in Siberia, contrasse una cancrena ad entrambe le
gambe da congelamento e di conseguenza, gli dovettero amputare entrambe le
gambe.
Sarebbe stato semplicemente umano soffrire per una
tale perdita. Ma, Ozawa san fu capace di affermare, "qui oggi, proprio in
questo momento, sono nato!" il suo atteggiamento era quello di chi era
nato senza gambe sin dall'inizio perciò non aveva nulla di cui lamentare la
perdita. Così la sua vita cominciò nuovamente".

"There’s nothing in life that necessitates laying
on narrow views that this is evil and that is good. If I succeed, it’s my life
and if I fail, it’s still my life. There’s no escape.
I had a friend, Ozawa Doyu, who happened to be a
priest. When he was a POW in Siberia, he contracted gangrene in both legs from
frostbite and consequently, had to have both of them cut off. It would be only
human to lament such a loss. But Ozawa-san was fond of saying, “Here today,
right now, am I being born!” His thinking was that if you have the attitude
that were you born without legs in the first place, you wouldn’t have anything
to lament. That’s when his life started again."
